Simple Blessings

I have been thinking about how some of life's simpler things are really blessings. Like a nice hot cup of coffee on a cold winter day, a bowl of fresh homemade tapioca pudding while it is still warm, and home made chocolate chip cookies. Just simple ingredients... flour, sugar, eggs, salt, vanilla.... but oh so yummy.... so I titled these images "Simple Blessings".

This little guy really did not want his picture taken. I had a terrible time trying to get him to sit still for even a second. He could move really, really fast, and all he had on his mind was escaping. I did manage to get a few shots of him though.

I love making home made biscuits. Scott's grandmother took the time to teach me to make biscuits years ago. I almost always think of her when I make them. Homemade biscuits, butter, and a little honey.... yum, yum.

This interesting little building sits in a field along a rural Michigan road. I am not sure what it is..... maybe a workshop of some type. I thought it looked especially pretty in the early morning light, just after sunrise.

A friend had extra apples so she gave me some. I had fun shooting them and making an apple pie.I took these earlier in the fall but just now got around to posting them. My kitchen theme is apples and I thought about having a couple of these printed to go in my kitchen but I can't figure out which ones. What do you think?

Fall In Michigan

I enjoyed driving around Michigan looking for signs of autumn. The colors were brilliant, the cool mornings and warmer days were enjoyable. The beauty of autumn has now faded and I'm looking forward to the pretty white scenes of winter :)

Apple Orchard and Pumpkin Patch

There are many beautiful places to visit and photograph in the fall, but one of my favorites is an orchard. I love to see the trees all lined up in rows, and hanging full of fruit. Most of these pictures were taken at Uncle John's Cider Mill, St. Johns, Michigan.

I thoroughly enjoyed my second trip to the western shores of Michigan. We visited 4 lighthouses on this trip. It was rainy and a little stormy, but our timing was almost perfect as it seemed to rain while we were in the car traveling to the lighthouses and clear up when it was time to get out and shoot. It did rain on us a little at the third lighthouse but not much.

My Garden

I love growing a garden. There is just something about placing that tiny little seed into the ground, waiting for it to sprout then spring to life and bring forth fruit. This was our first year at growing a garden in Michingan. We didn't have space for a big garden but our little garden produced well.

The garden is all gone now but I am already planning for next year.

This view shows the garden from the front looking toward the back, or the view you would see from the street.

The tomatoes above are a hybrid we bought as plants from the greenhouse. They are called mega bites. The tomatoes were not very big, but the plants were loaded with tomatoes. I counted over 40 tomatoes on one plant of this kind.

This isn't a pretty picture because of the power lines but it shows the whole garden, so I included it anyway.

Case Knive green beans. These beans are heirloom beans. They are my favorite bean. I always save my own seed.

This is a new heirloom tomato I tried this year. I bought the seed from an heirloom company and grew the plants from the seed. They are shaped like a pepper, very meaty, and have very few seed in them. And as you can see they bear very heavy also.

A basket of veges I fixed up as a gift. Of course I had to play with it a while and take pictures before I gave it away :)

A nice basket full of fresh green beans. I love having my own home canned green beans. There is just no comparison to the taste of these compared with store bought canned green beans.

Samantha has beautiful blue eyes. She gave me so many different expressions when I was photographing her but no smiles. These were taken in late August, about a month before her 1st birthday. As you can see by the first pictue, she's going to be a Canon girl :)

I tried again another day, but no smiles :)

Finally she smiled but only when her daddy was holding her.

In early August, I enjoyed hiking along this little stream in TN. I love the sounds of the water bubbling and rushing over the rocks. It was a shallow little stream and I waded across it a few times. Even though it was a hot day, the water was very, very cold.

I enjoyed visiting Standing Stone State Park in early August, 2011. I always go there in the spring for wildflowers and butterflies. I was thrilled to find autumn wildflowers and butterflies this time.

On our downtown Indy shoot, my friend and I found the squirrels were great models. It was a very hot day and this little one was hot and trying to cool himself by flattening out on the branches of the tree and the ground. The little baby cardinal was hopping all around and fluttering a little as it's anxious parents tried to feed it little pieces of the greenery they pulled off and call it into the more dense vegetation for protection. I loved getting to photograph it so closely.

Summer Wild Flowers Along The Walking Trail

There is a walking trail close to my house that travels along the Pine River for about 1/4 mile. I love to walk there and enjoy the beautiful views. The weeds have grown up along the banks of the river and there are several varieties of wild flowers blooming. The flowers make the walk even more enjoyable. I decided to go out early in the morning and take pictures of the view along the walk and some of the flowers. The reflections on the water early in the morning are gorgeous.

I enjoyed observing and photographing these 2 geese and their cute babies. They sure were taking good care of the little goslings. They were eating the dandelion blooms!

When they decided it was time to leave, the lead adult went into the water and all the babies right behind it and the last adult squeezed up right close behind the babies.... keeping them safe from the front and rear. Once they were out in the deep water far from the shore they let the babies spread out almost single file. Very interesting to watch.

I thought I would try a new bread recipe. It is called French Herb Bread. The dough is rolled up like a jelly roll with the herbs inside and then it rises again before you bake it. Tastes pretty yummy too!

Super Moon

Saturday night the moon was full and at it's closest point to the earth. As it made it's grand appearance on the horizon it was a site to behold. It was orange and appeared much, much, larger than normal in the sky. It seemed to dwarf everything with it's gigantic appearance. As it rose away from the horizon it's hugeness seemed to diminish and by the time it was high in the sky it didn't look large at all.

We woke Monday morning to find the snow fall during the night had coated all the trees and created a beautiful winter wonderland. I couldn't resist getting out in my yard and street and shooting a few shots. It wasn't long until I begin to notice the little bits of color peeking out from under the snow. I ran back and got my macro lens and had some fun shooting teeny tiny berries, and even a leaf. I was delighted to have so many photo ops right in my yard. Our house. (above)

Abbi's New Haircut

One of the big things on my after I move to do list was to find a groomer for Abbi. She is a teeny tiny yorkie and weighs only 3# 4 oz so I am really careful who I let groom her. I want to be sure it is someone who will be careful with her and be gentle with her, and someone I can trust.

Before I moved I searched for groomers in the St. Louis area and found a few. This one looked really good to me http://www.cleanasawhisker.biz/ . Last Monday we dropped by with Abbi and met Gina then we made an appointment and took her back the next day. Gina and Sasha (I think I have her name right) were very nice. I was really impressed with the way they handled Abbi. They were very gentle with her, very patient and seemed to really know what they were doing. I was well pleased with them and would reccomend them as groomers!

You should have seen the pitiful hair cut she had before she went to Clean As A Whisker. I cut her hair right before we moved and needless to say it didn't look very good. I have decided I am not good at cutting hair :)

Big Move

Monday after Thanksgiving, Scott and I packed up a big yellow Penske truck (with lots of help) and moved to St. Louis, Michigan to pastor a church. We arrived here on December 1st. We are all settled in our new home.

A Week At Hunting Island South Carolina

I spent a wonderful week at Hunting Island State Park this fall. It was so much fun. My sole purpose for being there was to take pictures. I really enjoyed the beach, it was a thrill to walk along with the sand beneath my feet, the waves lapping at my ankles, feel the sun beaming down, hear the noisy pelicans as they flew over, and just to enjoy all the glorious sights and sounds of the beach.

The Beach Tree

During my stay at Hunting Island South Carolina I was intrigued with this tree. It had a huge root system which had been exposed by the beach erosion. This area of the beach was troubled by erosion. Most of the trees had already fallen but this one was hanging on. The roots were so tall a 6 foot man could walk under them. I saw several people come by to check on the tree, some photographed it and others just observed it. Children climbed on it's roots and played underneath them.

September 1st, Hurricane Earl was coming near and strong undertows and extensive beach erosion was expected. I met a nice man named Doug who called the tree "My Tree". He had been photographing and observing the tree for 3 years, watching the beach erode from beneath it. He came for one last visit with his tree, the tide was already starting to come in. I thought he looked so tiny near the roots and photographed him there to show the enormity of the exposed root system and I talked with him after he finished and came up on the bank. The tree fell that day at high tide, even though the beautiful tree was gone, I found it's roots left protruding from the beach still made a nice point of interest in a sunrise picture.... so a tiny part of it continued on :)

I photographed the tree simply because it was interesting and intriguing to me. I had no idea it would not be there when I left at the end of the week. I thought since the tree was so watched by so many people it deserved it's own blog entry.

I have the cutest little niece named Maggie. She has a head full of blonde curly hair, and talks well above normal for her age. She wore me out the day I took these pictures. Blue Bells

I made two trips to Standing Stone State Park to photograph the blue bells. They are such a pretty delicate little spring flower, yet quiet a challenge to capture. They grown near a little creek that meanders through the park. You have to get down on the ground to capture them well and they always prefer the wet soggy areas :) and a nice gentle breeze seems to always be moving them causing it to be hard to get them sharp. I really like them in their bud stage when they are pink.

Fancy Gap

I recently went on a trip with my husband. On our way back home as we were traveling through Virginia on Interstate 81, we could see the mountain tops in front of us were white with ice and snow. I knew I wanted to take pictures when we reached this part of the mountain. We exited the interstate on the mountain at Fancy Gap exit, and went down a side road. The beauty was surreal. The trees were coated with ice, and glistened in the sun. There wasn't any place to pull over so I busily snapped pictures through the windshield of the truck.

At the bottom of the mountain we decided to take other backroads to see if we could get a good view of the snow covered mountains.

I was struck by the beauty of the mountains as they loomed up behind an elementary school. I thought, what a gorgeous backdrop for a playground.

I was so excited as we started back up the mountain. Because on our way down, as we traveled down the mountain we were captivated by the ice covered trees, and gorgeous views of the mountains, all of sudden we rounded a curve and saw a beautiful old stone building. Nestled in a little clearing just off the side of the road, it seemed somewhat out of place surrounded only by snow, rocks and trees, and abandoned.

My husband carefully entered the pull off area which was covered with several inches of snow. I was glad we had a 4 wheel drive, and that my husband is good at driving in the snow.....we would have been stuck if not :)

The evergreen trees were bent under their heavy load of ice and snow, and sparkled in the early evening sun. The beauty of the winter wonderland scene was impossible to capture on camera. The pictures only hint at the site my eyes beheld.

We crossed the road and walked slightly below the building for this view. I zoomed out so you could see more of the surroundings and how the land lays. The area in front of the building was so covered with snow, you couldn't tell if it was lawn or a pull off area. The little narrow mountain road was busy with vehicles buzzing up and down it. There was only about 18-24 inches of space to walk on between the white line and the deep snow.

A Memory Lane Picture

Every now and then I take a photo that evokes a memory lane trip. Somehow it reminds me of the past. These shots, of the little red wagon loaded with leaves, do just that. As I squeeze my eyes shut.......... I see two little boys, raking up piles of leaves only to run through them and spread them out again, covering each other up in them, posing for momma to take pictures of them, loading them into their wagon and hauling them to another spot, laughing, playing and spending hours enjoying the simple things of life, like little red wagons, and piles of colorful leaves. When I open my eyes again, the little boys are gone, they are all grown up now, in the place of the little boys, I see two fine young men. What a joy it has been to make this journey with them, and what a pleasant trip this little scene takes me on .....down memory lane

Fall In Tennessee

I love the warmth and beauty of spring and summer, and I always feel a little sadness as summer comes to a close. However..... I am awed by the beauty of the world arrayed in the glorious colors of fall. Here in Tennessee we had a beautiful fall season. The leaves were spectacular. I thoroughly enjoyed traveling around in my little corner of the world and capturing them on my camera. I knew I must hurry and record them, for soon they would turn loose and flutter to the ground. I read that "a falling leaf is nothing more than a summer's wave goodbye"..... but I think it is also a promise....... to return fresh and new in the spring.
Yes, a little rest, a little quiet, a little cold and then the world will once again burst with springtime. So I think I will choose to embrace the beauty of fall and enjoy a slower pace for a while. jt

Cannonsburgh Village

Cannonsburgh Village is located in Murfreesboro, TN. Cannonsurgh was the original name of Murfreesboro. This little village is a reconstructed southern village which serves as a living history museum of early southern life. It includes: a grist mill, one room school house, town hall, log home, little white country church, general store, blacksmith's shop and a large collection of antique farm equipment.

I spent most of a day just wandering from building to building and photographing the different scenes. I also spent a lot of time thinking about the people who had lived, worked and raised their families in these buildings.

This was a new experience for me. A special little boy named Carl (#89), was playing tackle football and I tackled shooting his game :) I don't understand football at all but I did enjoy the challenge of capturing the game. I can not say I enjoyed all of the game, especially the times Carl ended up at the bottom of the pile.

This is my favorite action series of the night. I loved the team mate coming to his aid :)

The close up shots are my favorites. I wanted to shoot some of him before he took off his helment and jersey but he was soaking wet with sweat and burning up and immediately took those things off to cool down. He really enjoyed giving me his tough, mean, football look as he posed :)

Standing Stone State Park Lake

I spent some time with DH, trolling around on this beautiful, peaceful little like. He fished while I played with my camera.

DH was trolling along the bank fishing near an old dead tree when he spotted this beaver on the bank. I think maybe it was a momma beaver with babies in the den. She was laying across the opening of her den.

We trolled past her a couple of times but she didn't move far from the opening of the den.

Wolf River Valley

In May, I visited the Wolf River Valley, where I spent most of my childhood. I enjoyed not only the literal ride but also the trip down memory lane. I am just now getting around to processing and posting my shots from that beautiful but stormy spring day. Even though it has been a while, I still wanted to share them.

A Perfect Place To Ride A Bike

Now in Tennesse, we don't have very many straight, level roads. We have a lot of hills and curves which are not good for bike riding. However I was privileged to live right at the end of a nice, straight, stretch, of a lightly traveled country road. This shot shows the old home place, where I lived at about age 8-12. You can see the barn, far in the distance. We lived in a big, old, farm house. Even though the house has been gone for several years, you can still see the big trees near the road, that were in our yard. This road was perfect for bike riding. I would first ride up the road to the barn drive, which was a little higher in elevation than the straight stretch of road. The first part of my ride would be down hill, and the rest of it would be on level ground. I would zoom down the hill and coast for a while before I even had to start pedaling. I can still remember the feel of the wind in my hair, the sunshine, and even the puddles of water I would splash through after a rain. Yes this little stretch of rural road provided many hours of bike riding joy for me as a little girl.

I particularly enjoyed the horses grazing under the stormy dramatic skies, and the red barn contrasted with the greens of the mountains and the yellow weed blossoms.

The Wolf River Methodist Church is a cute little country church. Sgt. Alvin C York is buried in the cemetery. The view from the cemetery takes in green fields, red barns, and beautiful mountains.

I also saw a beauty in the old tractor and the tiny little barn. I don't think I have seen a barn so small. The man who owned the farm suggested maybe it was a "one cow" barn :) Can you just imagine the crops that have been planted, plowed and harvested with the old tractor? The storms the old barn has weathered? When I visit an old farm I am always wondering about the history of it.
